2012 PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE

For many years we have been working towards a vision for the future of the church in our parish.  A glance through the ‘Parish Directory’ gives some idea of the number of parishioners involved in the day to day life of our Christian community.

What this future holds for the church in our Parish and Diocese is of great importance.  There is not the slightest doubt but that change will be involved, the church of the future will be different.  Be clear, the faith taught by the church will not change, but the role of the Christian Community—parishioners—will change as they undertake more and more responsibility for the life of the parish.  For two days last week close on 400 priests from our diocese assembled in the Conference Centre in City West Hotel—to pray, listen and discuss what the future holds for the life of the Catholic Church in our Diocese.

It is clear that change is inevitable as the number of priests serving in parishes decreases.  Change will not be confined to a reduction in the number of available masses in churches, it cannot be effective without consultation.  In many diocese the organisation of such consultations with the laity has already commenced.  Such a consultation will, I can safely say, be held in our Diocese.

Here in our parish the Pastoral Council has been working overtime in the organisation of such a consultation with the various groups and organisation associated with the parish.  These consultations will be held during the months of May and June.

The objective of the Council is to ‘draw up’, with the help of parishioners, a 3-5 year programme for our parish.

I make an appeal to all involved in the organisations of the parish to think of the future for our parish and to take part in the consultations organized for your group/organisation.  The future growth of God’s Kingdom in our parish lies in your hands.

Msgr. Colm Gallagher.
